Remembrance Day

It is Remembrance Day on Monday, 11th November. Your homework is to explain why the poppy is used as a symbol of Remembrance Day. What are we remembering? Why do we wear a poppy?

Have a look at the photos below. Why do you think the man was dressed like that? Where do you think he went? In what year do you think the photographs were taken? What might have happened to him? I will tell you some stories about him on Monday.

  1. I think the man was dressed like that because he was going to war. I think that he went war. I also think this photo was taken around 1939-1940. I think he got killed and was very important.

    1. Well done for guessing when the photo was taken. It was at the start of World War 2, in 1939.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields.

    John McCrae, 1915

  4. I think he is wearing that because he is having to fight in world war 2. We have to wear poppies to remember the people who were in the wars, and the people who are in wars now, because poppies grew after the wars, on the battlefields.

  5. On Sunday Anjali and I saw images of World War I and II and of the Vietnam War. These images were horrifying. Today, during the silence, these images were flashing through my mind. I am thankful to all those servicemen and women who are protecting us and keeping our country safe.
